Involvement in Bird Names for Birds has perhaps caused something of a paradox for me; the more time I have spent reading into the figures whose names these birds now bear, the less attention I have spent upon the birds themselves. To balance the scales a little, I decided I would take a detour into painting. Much of the time, seeing birds is what unpins the wonder they evoke in us. The vivid colours, the dramatic shapes, the evocative expressions. Taking a break to spend some time observing a few of these species helped me reconnect with them a little, and I hope perhaps they might for you too.
A core part of this initiative is to help decolonise nature, and as such 100% of artist’s profits from this design will go to charities that support increasing involvement of BIPOC and other marginalised groups in birding and conservation.
